SCARED everywhere - including in PH, where I live

EPCk4llW4AAjq_s?format=jpg&name=small
VIRUS: RACE TO BUILD HOSPITAL...
'THIS TIME I'M SCARED'...

China's bid to contain a deadly new virus by placing cities of millions under quarantine is an unprecedented undertaking but it is unlikely to stop the disease spreading, experts warn.

The contagious virus has already reached elsewhere in China and abroad, and even an authoritarian government has only a small timeframe in which trapped residents will submit to such a lockdown, they say.

"I think we have passed the golden period of control and prevention," said Guan Yi, an expert on viruses at Hong Kong University.

China began its campaign on Thursday, cutting off all transport links out of Wuhan, a city of 11 million people where the coronavirus linked to SARS emerged late last year.

A cascading number of nearby cities has since been added to the travel blacklist, corralling more than 40 million people in a bid to stop those with the disease travelling and infecting others elsewhere.

However, with the death toll at 26 and infections being detected as far away as the United States, there are fears the exercise is too little too late.

Yi, who returned from Wuhan just before the lockdown, pointed out huge numbers of people would have already left ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which began Friday.

They could have been incubating the virus "on their way out of Wuhan", he said.

Symptoms could take several days to emerge -- effectively seeding a health time-bomb across the country and abroad.

- Escape plans -

Meanwhile, new gaps in the security web in Wuhan and its surroundings will likely emerge over coming days, even as China deploys its formidable security forces.

Family of Chinese man with new coronavirus flew to Manila - HK health minister

ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jan 22 2020

MANILA (3rd UPDATE)—The family of a Chinese man who tested positive for the deadly novel coronavirus strain traveled to Manila on Wednesday, Hong Kong authorities said.

In a press conference, Hong Kong Health Minister Sophia Chan confirmed that the patient’s four family members flew from Hong Kong to Manila via Cebu Pacific 5J111, which landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The man remained in Hong Kong.

Charo Logarta Lagamon, director of Cebu Pacific's corporate communications department, told ABS-CBN News that no one on the flight was quarantined.

"We are closely monitoring the spread of the Wuhan virus, and have precautionary measures in place for our flights to and from China. We have been coordinating with the authorities to ensure the safety of our passengers, crew and staff," she said.

. . .

HONG KONG QUARANTINE

Hong Kong quarantined the 39-year-old man after the city's first preliminary positive result in a test for the new flu-like coronavirus found in an outbreak in central mainland China, authorities said.

The tourist from Wuhan came to Hong Kong on Tuesday via high-speed rail from nearby Shenzhen and was detected having fever at the border.

He was in stable condition in an isolation ward at Princess Margaret Hospital, Health Minister Sophia Chan said.

The outbreak has spread to more Chinese cities including the capital Beijing, Shanghai and Macau, and cases have been reported outside the country's borders, in the United States, South Korea, Thailand and Japan.

Seventeen people in China have died.

(WISE WORDS from Philippines)

From Dr. Edsel Salvaña, an infectious disease specialist, molecular epidemiologist and the director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the National Institutes of Health at the University of the Philippines in Manila:

Ok, deep breath everyone. This is getting out of hand. All these conspiracy theories about leaked viruses and concealed massive death tolls is just making everyone panic. Ignore the noise and do as follows:

1. In an outbreak situation, the last thing you want to do is panic. It helps no one and makes it harder for authorities to do their job. Don't contribute to the panic by spreading unverified and fake news.

2. Listen to the authorities, avoid unnecessary travel to outbreak areas, and DO NOT conceal any exposure or symptoms. If you are sick and you might have been exposed, please see a doctor and get evaluated properly.

3. There are no verified novel coronavirus infections in the Philippines yet but there are some suspects. Listen to the latest medical bulletins and not your panicking Facebook or Twitter friend.

4. As far as we know, this virus seems to be less deadly than SARS and is specifically deadly to elderly, the very young and those with medical conditions. If you are in those risk groups, avoid travel, avoid crowded areas. Wearing a mask can help, but it is more important to avoid places where transmission can occur.

We have survived numerous outbreaks and disasters before. Certainly the timing of the volcanic eruption could not have come at a worse time. But we need to help our government by following instructions and keeping a clear head and a clear mind. STOP SPREADING FAKE NEWS. It makes our jobs harder. Get good info and take good care of your health.

(On Friday) Panic coursed through the world’s second-largest equity market as investors sold stocks on concern a deadly virus will worsen over China’s week-long trading break.

The Shanghai Composite Index settled 2.8% lower after the close of trading, the worst end to a Lunar Year in its three-decade history. More than 90% of the mainland’s 4,000 stocks fell on volumes that were 20% above average, with foreign traders selling a record $1.7 billion worth of the shares via links with Hong Kong. The yuan weakened as much as 0.4% and government bond futures rose to the highest since 2016.

Pressure is building on Beijing to contain a new SARS-like virus that’s killed at least 17 people and infected hundreds. The coronavirus first appeared last month in the city of Wuhan in central China, a city with 11 million residents -- more than in London or New York -- that’s now essentially in lockdown after officials halted public travel.

Inside China’s Virus Zone, Unease Grips a City in Lockdown

“Fear and panic are rampant,” said Wang Daixin, a fund manager at Bristlecon Pine Asset Management Ltd. “It’s hard to tell how bad things will get before a turn for the better. I didn’t get out when I had the chance to, so now I might as well sit it out rather than lose money. Others are offloading at whatever cost.”

Coronavirus Growth Rates and Market Reactions

  • The New York Times – As Coronavirus Spreads, Hong Kong Limits Border Traffic With Mainland China
Facing heavy pressure even from some pro-establishment politicians, Chief Executive Carrie Lam is shutting down train lines and limiting flights and tourism.

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s top official, said on Tuesday that the city would sharply cut the number of visitors from mainland China in an effort to control the spread of the new coronavirus that emerged in the city of Wuhan last month. The limits, including the closure of rail and ferry service and reducing flight arrivals by about half, will begin at midnight Thursday. They follow days of increasing pressure from health care workers, epidemiologists and even pro-Beijing politicians who have traditionally supported Mrs. Lam’s government. Hong Kong will close several of its border crossing points and increase checkpoints to detect fevers at those that remain, Mrs. Lam said. China will also stop issuing visas for individual travelers from the mainland, which make up about half of visitors to Hong Kong, she added.

  • Tass (Russia) – Chinese coronavirus dangerous at 2 meter distance, expert says
The expert noted the virus might be transmitted by contact, if it gets in human eyes or on mucous membranes

The 2019-nCoV coronavirus may be contagious at a two-meter distance, says National Health Commission expert Li Xingwang of Beijing Ditan Hospital. “Everyone must wear protective masks and reduce the number of close contacts to as low as possible. By ‘close,’ we currently mean a distance of one to two meters – the infection may happen at this distance,” says Chinese media quotes the expert as saying.

  • Kyodo News – Japan sees 1st coronavirus case not linked to travel to China
Bus driver infected with coronavirus drove 2 tour groups from Wuhan

The government on Tuesday confirmed two more cases in Japan of the new coronavirus, including a tour bus driver who has never been to the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak of the deadly virus began in a seafood and poultry market. The findings bring the total number of confirmed infections in Japan to six. The bus driver in his 60s drove two groups of Chinese tourists from Wuhan earlier this month, Japanese health minister Katsunobu Kato said.

SHANGHAI, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Expatriates are leaving coronavirus-hit China - and not just from the outbreak epicentre in Wuhan - as worries about their children take hold and private health care facilities start turning away the feverish.

Some foreigners also fear being trapped indefinitely as airlines cancel flights and countries quarantine or limit entry for people who have recently set foot in the country, according to interviews with eight people who are or were based in four Chinese cities.

A growing number of governments are urging their citizens not to travel to China and the United Kingdom said on Saturday its embassy and consulates in the country will maintain only a skeleton staff.

"It may be increasingly difficult for those who wish to leave China to do so, and there is a growing risk of UK nationals being unable to access medical care as hospitals become overwhelmed," the British embassy said on Saturday.

The virus, declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, has killed 259 people and spread to some two dozen countries, although the vast majority of those known to be infected are in China.

Expat chatgroups are alight with exchanges on the pros and cons of leaving, and tips on visas.

"Wouldn't go if we didn't have kid," Russian expat Maria Arkhangelskaya, who has a 20-month-old daughter and left Shanghai for Thailand on Thursday, said via WeChat.

. . .

One U.S. citizen who is based in Shanghai and asked not to be identified said he flew home to California last week.

"I'm not worried so much about the virus as I am about being forced to go to a Chinese hospital simply for having a fever," he said.

Over 900,000 foreigners were living in China last year, according to a January 2019 report in the official China Daily.

GROUNDING FEARS

The WHO has praised China for its response to the outbreak thus far.

Many areas of China have extended the Lunar New Year holiday through Feb 9, and companies have curtailed business travel.

Hi Dr Bubb

Hope you are well - haven't visited for a while, but this thing is real.

Take care of yourself - and your family. Don't know if you still live out in HK?

I see the Shanghai opened with a gap the week 200pts down, so this is heading to the stock market, and behind the curve on this.

Regards

Hey, thanks for that warning.

I have moved from HK, China to Makati in The Philippines, for about 1 1/2 years now

Safer here?  Maybe.

People seem less worried (than in HK).  I hope it is not mere complacency
