Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum shocks Democratic rivals, wins nomination for governor

Andrew Gillum rode a late surge of African-American voters to an upset victory in the Democratic primary Tuesday and an historic opportunity to become the first black governor in Florida history.

The Associated Press called the race for Gillum shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday with Gillum holding a two-point lead over Gwen Graham that amounted to about 25,000 votes. Gillum was beating Graham by about a 2-to-1 margin in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The outcome delighted a raucous crowd that gathered in Tallahassee to celebrate Gillum’s victory

Despite being vastly outspent by his rivals, the charismatic and unabashedly liberal Gillum built a devoted following of progressives, many of them young and African-American, with his campaign message of social justice and lifting up poor people and appealing to Florida’s growing diversity.

His victory gives Florida voters a striking contrast in both style and substance with his Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who has the enthusiastic support of President Donald J. Trump.

Here are 5 things you need to know about progressive candidate Andrew Gillum who just won a stunning victory in the Florida primary

Progressive candidate Andrew Gillum won a major upset victory in the Democratic Party primary Tuesday night for the upcoming Florida gubernatorial election.

The Tallahassee mayor was seen as a longshot for the statewide race, where he had been polling in fourth place. But he has now seized the nomination and will face off against Ron DeSantis, a supporter of President Donald Trump, in November.

Here are five things to know about the upstart candidate:

(WHO is doing the dog-whistling?)

Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo slammed DeSantis after the interview.

"It's disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles," Rizzo said in a statement.

Geoff Burgan, Gillum's campaign spokesman, told the Tallahassee Democrat that his campaign was letting Rizzo respond to DeSantis's comments.

"DeSantis's comments speak for themselves," he said.

DeSantis's campaign quickly pushed back on critics, saying it was "absurd" to claim that the Florida Republican was doing anything other than criticizing Gillum's agenda.

“Ron DeSantis was obviously talking about Florida not making the wrong decision to embrace the socialist policies that Andrew Gillum espouses. To characterize it as anything else is absurd," DeSantis communications director Stephen Lawson said in a statement to The Hill.

"Florida’s economy has been on the move for the last eight years and the last thing we need is a far-left democrat trying to stop our success," Lawson added.

In a follow-up segment on Fox, interviewer Sandra Smith denounced DeSantis's "monkey" remark, saying, "We do not condone this language and wanted to make our viewers aware that he has since clarified his statement." She noted that Gillum was set to appear on the network later in the day.

The Florida Republican's remarks came shortly after Gillum pulled off a stunning win in Florida's Democratic gubernatorial primary on Tuesday night.

DeSantis, who was endorsed by President Trump in the race, also won his party's primary to compete for the seat held by retiring Gov. Rick Scott (R).

Gillum said in an interview with CNN later on Wednesday morning that he believes Florida and its "rich diversity" are going to be looking for a governor who "is going to bring us together, not divide us. Not misogynist, not racist, not bigots."

Sounds like one wants people to fall in line, and follow their IDENTITY profiles, and the other wants to point to a city (Tallahassee) screwed up by monkeying around, using SJW politics

Cuomo: ‘I’m Not a Socialist. I’m Not 25 Years Old’

The governor, fresh off a resounding victory against a more progressive challenger in New York's Democratic gubernatorial primary, made the remarks on Friday while discussing with reporters the efforts his state is undertaking to mitigate the damage by Hurricane Florence, according to the Associated Press.

Cuomo was asked about attacks his primary opponent, former "Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon, made in the midst of the campaign accusing him of being insufficiently progressive. The governor expressed he came "from the most progressive tradition in the Democratic Party."

"I think I received more votes in the Democratic primary than any governor in history," Cuomo said. "I am from the most progressive tradition in the Democratic Party. My father was a progressive when they called progressives liberals."

Cuomo is the oldest son of the late Mario Cuomo, who as governor of New York during the 1980s endeared himself to liberals for vigorously denouncing the policies of the Reagan administration. The younger Cuomo, however, has not aroused the same sentiments since taking office in 2011, with some astute political observers believing he would be vulnerable from a progressive challenge this year.

Such beliefs were proved to be unfounded on Thursday as Cuomo easily dispatched Nixon by over 30 percentage points in the Democratic primary.

I'm tempted to file this in the newspeak dictionary as

"mob rule" = Another name for Democracy, used by monarchists.

Unless you have a better suggestion.

I'd put the Saudi Royals mafia at #1, British Royals mafia at least try and keep their activities out of the public view (for now, Charlie set to change that).

As for Americans, what I came to realise is that the American mafia is bad abroad - generally murdering everyone for profit, and bad at home - keeping American citizens as ignorant, obedient workers.

Plus, American mafia and British Royals mafia are basically the same people/families.

From a philosophical point of view, I put anyone facilitating all that, intentionally or not, in the "bad" category.

Insane Regressive Ocasio Co-opted... already

WATCH: Ocasio-Cortez Praises Democratic Establishment After Campaigning Against It

Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez changed her tone toward the Democratic establishment immediately after arriving in Washington, D.C. this week after she had previously campaigned against it.

"One of the things that I admire so much about Leader Pelosi is that she comes from a space of activism and organizing and so I think she really appreciates civic engagement and really what I'm here to do is just to support the folks that are here," Ocasio-Cortez said this week.

"Really what I’m here to do is, uh, is just to support the folks who are here," Ocasio-Cortez continued.

WATCH: (at link)

Ocasio-Cortez repeatedly railed against the Democratic establishment during her campaign, trying to portray herself as the next Bernie Sanders.

"Time to say BYE BYE to the Democratic establishment," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted earlier this year before she won the Democratic nomination for New York's 14th Congressional District. "Today is why Justice Democrats (@justicedems) exist. We don’t have time for weak, corporate Ds who don’t take their constituents’ lives as seriously as their own. Ocasio2018 is primarying a bad Democrat too. Take note."
