Bitcoin exchange Coinbase launches the Dow Jones of cryptocurrencies

  • Coinbase is launching a weighted index fund for cryptocurrencies.
  • Much like how the Dow Jones Industrial Average gives a sense of the American economy, this fund tries to reflect major trends in the cryptocurrency market.
  • "It's an easy way to get exposure to the crypto assets that we offer on our exchange," says Coinbas President and COO Asiff Hirji.

Popular online exchange Coinbase is releasing a weighted index fund for cryptocurrencies.

"It's a very simple to use, easy way to get exposure to the crypto-assets that we offer on our exchange," Coinbase President and COO Asiff Hirji told CNBC's "Fast Money" Tuesday.

The Coinbase Index Fund will give accredited U.S. investors exposure to all assets listed on the company's current exchange, GDAX. The currencies will be weighted based on market capitalization.

Much like how the Dow Jones Industrial Average is a basket of 30 stocks meant to give a sense of the American economy, this fund will try to reflect major trends in the cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin’s Tokyo Whale Sold $400 Million and He’s Not Done Yet

He’s not your typical Bitcoin whale, but Nobuaki Kobayashi has become a force to be reckoned with in the cryptocurrency world.

The Tokyo attorney and bankruptcy trustee for the now-defunct Mt. Gox exchange disclosed on Wednesday that he sold about $400 million of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash since late September. Kobayashi, who’s liquidating the tokens on behalf of Mt. Gox creditors, has another $1.9 billion to offload.

A New Kind of Bitcoin Whale

Mt. Gox's bankruptcy trustee is offloading cryptocurrencies to repay creditors

Once the world’s biggest Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy protection four years ago after disclosing that it lost 850,000 Bitcoins, then worth about $500 million. The company, which later said it recovered about 200,000 Bitcoins, blamed hackers for the loss.

While Kobayashi didn’t provide details of his strategy for selling the coins, he said he tried to get “as high a price as possible.” Disclosures in his report on the Mt. Gox website suggest his Bitcoin sales since September fetched the equivalent of $10,105 on average. The cryptocurrency was trading at $10,031 as of 6:45 a.m. Hong Kong time on Thursday.

London house prices slump most since financial crisis...

Price drop underscores hit from Brexit uncertainty, high inflation

House prices in London have dropped the most since the height of the financial crisis, underscoring the impact from rising inflation and uncertainty over the U.K.’s exit from the European Union.

The average price of a home in the capital dropped to £593,396 ($822,447) in the three months to January, down 2.6% from the same period last year, according to a report by data provider Acadata out on Monday. In comparison, house prices across all of England and Wales rose 0.7% during the period, with the biggest jump seen in the North West.

MW-GF251_London_20180312070802_NS.png?uu

London — once the center of a U.K. property boom — has now seen house prices fall for three straight months, according to the data. The weakness comes as the country grapples with uncertainty over the Brexit negotiations with Brussels, with particular focus on how the divorce will impact the capital’s financial center and investments.

The EU referendum in 2016 also sparked a plunge in the pound GBPUSD, +0.4116%  , which pushed up inflation and is now eating into household’s budgets. Rising inflation also prompted the Bank of England to raise interest rates for the first time in a decade in November, driving up the cost of mortgages.

From the Crypto Cats thread

E (on Viber): Do you think that is it for the fall or would it go below 8000 again?

+ A retest is possible,  but I wanted to bring my hedge to the lowest level in a Long time, because I was not sure we would get another chance.  One thing that got me to buy (so heavily) was that the selling volume near the lows was not heavy

E : Got this. Thank you for all sharing

+ I let the market tell me - haha

+ I can have a view -like: The market can fall to support near $8000.  But if the action is not confirming my expectations there (in terms of volume & chart pattern), then I will rethink.

E : That is the trick, understanding the market

+ It never works well when you try to TELL THE MARKET where to go, and ignore its signals.  I am not saying you are doing that.

But I know many who do,  Example:  so many crypto holders have told me: The market will go back up!  It is going to $50,000, $100,000! (or whatever)

HOW CAN THEY KNOW THAT?  my attitude is "anything can happen" -- and I watch for the signals

BTS - 2d

pUEE8f1.png

+ I see some signs of a Low being in place on THAT chart - What do YOU SEE ??

+ But one short term chart is not enough... to know what a high degree of certainty.  My present time is to ride my very-lightly hedged position higher until the market starts to look tire and hits resistance levels.  There is a chance that a very important low may be in place, and I will post some charts later showing why I think that mat be possible

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Friday night that he was firing former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a longtime and frequent target of President Donald Trump’s anger, just two days before his scheduled retirement date.

The move, which had been expected, was made on the recommendation of FBI disciplinary officials and comes ahead of an inspector general report expected to conclude that McCabe was not forthcoming with the watchdog office as it reviewed the bureau’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

Sessions said in a statement that investigators “concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.”

McCabe immediately disputed the findings in his own statement, saying the firing was part of a Trump administration “war” on the FBI.

“I am being singled out and treated this way because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey,” McCabe said, referring to the former FBI director who was fired by Trump last May.

Though McCabe had spent more than 20 years as a career FBI official, and had played key roles in some of the bureau’s most recent significant investigations, Trump repeatedly condemned him over the last year as emblematic of an FBI leadership he contends is biased against his administration. The White House had said the firing decision was up to the Justice Department but seemed to signal this week that it would welcome the move.

Data Leak Puts FACEBOOK Under Intensifying Scrutiny...

Violated FTC privacy deal?

Lack of leadership could sink company...

  • Facebook's reaction to a year of scandal has vacillated between defensive cluelessness and aloof silence.
  • Users are getting the message that information they post on Facebook can be used in ways they did not intend, and usage is starting to decline.
  • Meanwhile, executives are selling shares like crazy, including a plan by Mark Zuckerberg to sell almost $13 billion worth of shares by mid-2019.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook

Facebook is facing an existential test, and its leadership is failing to address it.

Good leaders admit mistakes, apologize quickly, show up where they're needed and show their belief in the company by keeping skin in the game.

Facebook executives, in contrast, react to negative news with spin and attempts to bury it.
