Cracked ! The Secret world of Offshore banking

This could be bigger than wiki-leaks

30 Years Of Secrets: “This Secret World Has Finally Been Revealed”

April 3rd was a historic day in investigative journalism. The largest treasure trove of information ever obtained by a media organization was obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Over 1000 names have now been released included among a bevy of secret files 160 times larger than the US State Dept. Wikileaks cables. In this amazing expose, Secret Files Expose Offshore's Global Impact, you'll learn how 86 journalists from 46 different countries have gone through 2.5 million files and have used 'high tech data crunching and shoe-leather reporting' while sifting through emails, ledgers from accounts and many other files covering close to 30 years, and with astonishing results. The key findings are down at the bottom of this story. Have the 'Wizards' been uncloaked?

“I’ve never seen anything like this. This secret world has finally been revealed,” said Arthur Cockfield, a law professor and tax expert at Queen’s University in Canada, who reviewed some of the documents during an interview with the CBC. He said the documents remind him of the scene in the movie classic The Wizard of Oz in which “they pull back the curtain and you see the wizard operating this secret machine.”

A cache of 2.5 million files has cracked open the secrets of more than 120,000 offshore companies and trusts, exposing hidden dealings of politicians, con men and the mega-rich the world over.

Don't we all want to know who the wizards are, hiding behind the curtains, shifting the levers that cause so much pain for so many while shielding themselves from scrutiny?

The secret records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists lay bare the names behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands and other offshore hideaways.

They include American doctors and dentists and middle-class Greek villagers as well as families and associates of long-time despots, Wall Street swindlers, Eastern European and Indonesian billionaires, Russian corporate executives, international arms dealers and a sham-director-fronted company that the European Union has labeled as a cog in Iran’s nuclear-development program.

The PUSH is on ! In Russia, at least !

http://www.washingto...e8f1_story.html

President Vladimir Putin has given Russian officials a three-month deadline to close their foreign bank accounts or face dismissal.

Putin’s decree released Tuesday by the Kremlin obliges officials to file their income declarations by July 1. Putin’s chief of staff, Sergei Ivanov, said they will have to close their bank accounts by that time. Those who have real estate abroad will be required to explain how they could make the purchase, and those who fail will face being ousted.

A tiny one off tax on this insidious, obscene, ridiculous mass of wealth, that is squirreled away in off shore private banks, would sort so many of the world’s problems in one foul swoop.

All that wealth just sat there, so some greedy arrogant arseoles can gloat over their balance sheets, is sickening. They couldn't spend it all even if they wanted to. So WHATS THE POINT OF KEEPING IT HIDDEN AWAY?

The misery and desperation of, quite literally, billions of people could be removed in a single key stroke.

If that kind of thinking makes some think I'm a socialist, so be it. It’s better than trying to defend this as an acceptable consequence of capitalism.

Never forget that these "elite" have amassed this wealth at the expense of everyone else.

How many Billions does one man need ?

A maximum wealth limit is long overdue in a world where more than half its population is literally starving to death

'Thousands of names haven't been analyzed'

Deutsche Welle-9 hours ago

... into the murky world of global tax havens and the individuals involved. ... it's possible to secretly ownproperty in London for example which is ...

BVI_Course_2005.gif

The identities of some of those involved have been revealed, but where does it go from here? Is it not the task of politicians to come up with ways of tackling the problem? And how willing are they to do so given their previous lack of interest in clamping down on banks and wealthly individuals?

Well, one prominent politician here (in the UK), Lord Oakeshott (member of the Liberal Democrats and an investment banker - the ed.) said in response to this that our disclosures were a stain on the face of Britain because the British Virgin Islands are a British territory which is the home of hundreds of thousands of these secret off-shore companies which enable individuals to hide their wealth. So I think there'll be increasing political pressure to do something about the scandal of the BVI.

The other development is going to be that because we are exposing the identities of those who want to keep their wealth secret, they will no longer have the same confidence that if you go to the BVI or Singapore or the Seychelles that your details can be kept secret so I think they will lose confidence and diminish the attraction of these off-shore havens

So BTC FTW ?

(serious point - could this mean that bitcoin or its comparators/successors will just be the next "safe haven" for crooks and the morally bankrupt?)

((For those thinking the internet will end up tied down by government/business/etc btw, I point you to consider the human-led Mississippi management mishaps))

(((I hope I'm right about the internet... I hope human expression remains free to be expressed... in opposition to its oppressors...)))

David Wilcock on the importance of the leaked files

2.5 MILLION LEAKED FILES TARGETING POLITICIANS AND MEGA-RICH WORLDWIDE

This excerpt from April 3, 2013 reveals the nature of this new, worldwide alliance of journalists — and the 2.5 million documents they uncovered to help solve our problems.

Secret Files Expose Global Impact of Offshore Accounts

http://www.icij.org/...s-global-impact

A cache of 2.5 million files has cracked open the secrets of more than 120,000 offshore companies and trusts, exposing hidden dealings of politicians, con men and the mega-rich the world over.

The secret records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists lay bare the names behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands and other offshore hideaways….

The leaked files provide facts and figures — cash transfers, incorporation dates, links between companies and individuals — that illustrate how offshore financial secrecy has spread aggressively around the globe, allowing the wealthy and the well-connected to dodge taxes and fueling corruption and economic woes in rich and poor nations alike.

The records detail the offshore holdings of people and companies in more than 170 countries and territories.

THE BIGGEST STOCKPILE OF INSIDE INFORMATION EVER OBTAINED

As the article continues, we find that this is the biggest, most elaborate exposure of inside info in the history of the media — 160 times bigger than Wikileaks.

http://www.icij.org/...s-global-impact

The hoard of documents represents the biggest stockpile of inside information about the offshore system ever obtained by a media organization.

The total size of the files, measured in gigabytes, is more than 160 times larger than the leak of U.S. State Department documents by Wikileaks in 2010.

To analyze the documents, ICIJ collaborated with reporters from The Guardian and the BBC in the U.K., Le Mondein France, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Germany, The Washington Post, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and 31 other media partners around the world.

Eighty-six journalists from 46 countries used high-tech data crunching and shoe-leather reporting to sift through emails, account ledgers and other files covering nearly 30 years.

INCREDIBLE PROGRESS BEING MADE ON AN INTERNATIONAL BASIS

Yesterday’s update from this Alliance of journalists, on April 25, 2013, reveals solid data points, worldwide, of how quickly the Cabal is being isolated and shut down.

Release of Offshore Records Draws Worldwide Response

http://www.icij.org/...ldwide-response

ICIJ’s investigative series on offshore secrecy – which draws from a cache of 2.5 million secret records – has ignited reactions around the globe.

Since the initial release of stories by the ICIJ and its media partners across the world, public officials have issued statements, governments have launched investigations, and politicians and journalists have been debating the implications of the records and the reporting.

From here, a list of 43 different news items related to this stunning release of 2.5 million incriminating documents follows.

The list is so long, complex and international in scope that I recommend you go read it for yourself, rather than having me attempt to re-post it here.

This is the most tangible, practical sign yet that the Alliance we have been speaking about, all this time, really does exist — and is working to defeat the Cabal.

Interesting - the investigation seems to be widening

Authorities Announce Tax Haven Investigation

Tax authorities in the U.S., Britain, and Australia today

announced they are working with a gigantic cache of leaked data that may be the beginnings of one of the largest tax investigations in history.

The secret records are believed to include those obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists that lay bare the individuals behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands, Singapore and other offshore hideaways.......

I think they're going for the Al Capone solution. He was jailed for tax fraud rather than murder, extortion etc

HOW MUCH money is in Tax Havens?

.

Maybe $100-200 Trillion, some who think the R's are incredibly rich might think. But not all say that.

.

In the SCMP today, Oxfam is quoted as saying that: "the rich have hidden at least US$18.5 trillion in tax havens around the globe, causing the loss of more than US$156 billion in tax revenue."

.

Where is it?

Oxfam thinks two-thirds of it is "hidden in European tax havens such as Luxembourg," ... and a "third of offshore wealth is sitting in tax havens linked to Britain, such as the BVI and the Cayman Islands, undeclared and untaxed."

.

European leaders are now talking about "a year-end deadline to do away with banking secrecy."

...

BTW, Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook estimates that the world's "net financial wealth totalled US$94.7 trillion last year, excluding property."

...

(If we believe the Official estimates of 175,000 tonnes of gold, at $1400, it is worth only $8.64 Trillion.).

*What's "all the Gold" worth:

175K mt x 2204 = 385.7mn lb

385.7mn x 16 = 6.17 Bn Oz

6.17 Bn x $1,400 = $8.64 Trillion

$8.64 Trillion / 7 billion = $1,234 / person

Or, just under One Gold Oz. per person

Offshore tax dealings: celebrities and sportsmen in leaked Jersey files

Leaked records held with Kleinwort Benson reveal the range of prominent individuals involved in offshoring

The Jersey files are taken from records of more than 20,000 individuals held with the "wealth management" firm Kleinwort Benson, which were leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in Washington DC, and shared with the Guardian. Both organisations are publishing details of carefully selected individuals to further the public debate about off-shoring and tax avoidance......
