Hi, first posting on here

I'm a long time lurker on HPC (and now here). Mainly I'm just reading and learning - the regular posters on here have much of interest to say; benefits of experience.

HPC indirectly saved me from spending far too much on a house and both these sites have opened my eyes to other ways of improving my standard of life :)

Lately, HPC has a lot of noise and I'm preferring this site. The content on here is very good and as yet I don't feel I have enough to contribute.

Maybe some daft newbie questions though...

Questions are welcome. Why not try some, and see what response you get.

Post them HERE on this thread, if you do not know where lese to post them

ok...

I have seen you talk about buying calls/puts recently. I understand the basic mechanics behind the trades (the 'dummies guide' was good) - are you analysing options in the same way you would go about analysing a regular trade?

That is an excellent question, M.

Giving a proper answer, will take some work. I am happy to do so, but would prefer to answer

on the "Options: theory & practice" thread

I don't think GEI is doing too badly for such a new site.

Compare with HPC: virtually everyone has a vested increase in housing, one way or the other. Yet HPC was just a single section for a year or more before it evolved into a multi-forum. GEI has 12 forums already, and it is only a few months old. Maybe a main forum where you can discuss anything within the GEI remit might get things going ? Good threads could be archived in the sub-sections at user request.

Keep up the good work DrB - I'm still long GEI ! :P

Here here! Another thing is, you may have a few people like myself who are interested in the markets but not into energy issues as much. Probably why I tend to wider market issues mainly.

"I tend to wider market issues mainly"

Me too.

Perhaps "Green Energy" Investors is renamed?

I may start a poll sometime in future about the name.

Maybe something like "Curious Investors" (but not that) would have been a better name for the activity here.

Does the "green energy" part put people off?

BTW, I may post more about energy investments when I think the time is right. I dont think we are in the right place for that, cyclically speaking. And I think the community developing here will benefit from focussing on a wider theme until the time is right

While there's a leaning to green energy, I think the site's been much more general from the get-go. Could be that you are losing a few people along the way with the 'green' bit. Here's a few alternatives for the mix:

Independent Energy Investors

The Uncommon Investor

The Unconventional Investor

The Inquisitive Investor

Energy Investors Unbound

Net Energy Investors

TLM

I would agree with your comments TLM. Maybe GEI as a website name is too specific. I would even go a step further and drop the energy part from the title.

I do agree the Green Energy has an important part to play for the future of the planet so I would keep GEI issues as a forum within the site.

Hows about "New Century Investors/Investments"

Just my 2 penn'eth

Have to say I agree. I think 'green' is too niche. The renewables/green etc sections are very interesting, but the markets and general investment discussions interest me more. I think something along the lines of theindependentinvestor.com or thecontrarianinvestor.com would attract a greater cross section of potential members. Definatley keep the green section though. I think the 'financial independance' section is another great idea. You have a great foundation for the future of the website. I want to find and share ideas on how to grow and protect my capital, to become more financially independant, and I believe there are many more like me out there.

As I said in another thread - this site definitely seems to have 2 distinct kinds of members.

Those who are seasoned investors who offer their commentary, views & analysis, and those that are here to learn (and eventually contribute). The latter is majority, and I think it will take a while for them to build up their confidence!

"it will take a while for them to build up their confidence"

The best way is by posting, by asking questions, and by studying the "educational" section here

I feel guilty for not coming here and posting more often,

part of the reason,

1. I lost a huge amount of risk capital getting stopped out of short positions US equity futures positions too many times a few weeks before the global equity meltdown. ( partly I guess i just made mistakes, wasn't patient enough/ over traded, couldn't give the market the full attention and time it really needed )

2. I'm in the US at the momenet so HPC just has more critical mass, for light entertainment purposes, i'm sorry I know, I hate myself its boring and stale, why do I keep visiting... note to self:... HPC is dull

3. The oNLy green energy investment i'm likely ever going to make is ACTA.L it's just rocks, Its going to change the world.... I must own all ACTA shares in existance.

4. I've temporarily lost interesting in Trading/investing because I've found some (possibly) lucrative Stat-arb type strategies that are simple to trade. so im waiting for some less volatile markets to test them out in.

I should read this site more... just need to make a habit of it.

Jonpo, you will have to tell us more about those Stat-arb type strategies when you get the time.

Thanks to those who visit, and to those who post. Can we have your help in solving a mystery?

Most users ever online was 55 on Apr 4 2006, 03:22 PM, that was a new record.

But there were very few postings. And membership is growing too.

Please help us

I think many posters have hit it on the head. HPC is far easier to contribute to because it's possible to rant but GEI being more specialist will attract the voyeur. The person that wants to learn but feels that their comments are too naive for here.

Regarding the poll it may be useful to have an additional choice of:

I just want to look and learn.

Cheers

Denzil

Hmm...

The arrival of "the continuous computers" many of the Guests have very similar computer codes:

From:

Guest ( 66.234.139.194 ) to Guest ( 66.234.139.220 )

Why does this mean? Are many from the same internet cafe perhaps??

today's Reach per Million has exploded:

Reach per million users:

Today.: 1 wk. .: Avg. 3 mos.

.. 5.0 .: .. 1.5 .: ... 2.25 ....
