  1. Interview from Eric King at King World News with William Huston -- mp3 to listen to or download - 13 minutes duration. He talks about a 180-year cycle in our solar system, the Bari centre (sp?) which puts pressure on the earth's crust, creating a surge of water from the northern to the southern hemisphere. It is also linked to earthquakes, volcanos, and tsunami. It causes catastrophic climatic changes. Arctic becomes very cool after volcanic ash clouds enter the stratosphere, and bad things happen to crops. Cycle also linked to low sunspot activity, social and political unrest and military action. 4 in the last millenium. He predicts hyper-inflationary stagflation, including sky-high food prices, and ultimately, the collapse of fiat money and a return to sound money in the next 10-15 years. Suggests living 40-50 degrees north. He estimates 50% of the population will be severely disadvantaged by this. Link to page KWN page download mp3 here: listen here After the crisis period, he is optimistic for "a new Elizabethan era", a much better period for everyone. He is a friend of Robin Griffiths, who suggested to Eric King that he interview Mr Huston.

UK House prices: News & Views

Didn't Fred Harrison say it won't be until 2018 that the bubble pops? edited to add: just checked: 2019 Well, according to the 18-year cycle theory, the mid-cycle downturn is still five years away. That means the agonising over bursting bubbles is premature. But it also means that the house price take-off, which began early this time, will be all the more painful next time. Most of the pain, of course, will not be felt by London property owners. The proportion of high loan-to-value mortgages has reached 25% in the north-east, compared to 7% in London, according to data provided by chartered surveyors e.surv. The economics of apartheid continue to operate, with a vengeance, thanks to the cash subsidies and indemnities from Cameron’s coalition government. from: http://www.sharetherents.org/return-sub-prime/

Yes, I blame HelpTheBuilders®. It has simply served to inflate prices by the amount of "free" money on offer.

Houses are selling like hotcakes in the north of scotland. Prices are definitely higher than before. We are now thinking we should buy, mostly because we are fed up with dealing with intrusive landlords. Our rent will have gone up +10% in 2.5 years, to £1000 by the end of this year. For £200 more/month we can buy a larger, older home, and walk to work instead of commuting by car. I still hate the idea of buying in this overheated market, but I would like a bit of freedom to do as I please.

  8. Thanks to a post by Vicarious from another thread, I read with interest this article: http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article28957.html Halfway down, Nadeem goes into the topic of European Bank Run Contagion Risk (for UK banks). While we may be wise enough not to keep excess cash in unsafe banks, here are some good ideas from Nadeem, excerpted from the article linked here Market Oracle

Capital Controls - Are they coming?

I agree, they are treating your money as if it is their's! Shocking. One more reason not to deal with the high street banks. I hadn't heard that news story. Pretty shocking. I hope it is a wake-up call.

Carolyn Dean – Magnesium: The Miracle Mineral

I read her book, it's very good. Taking magnesium citrate tablets, I am sleeping much more soundly, not waking in the night. And muscle aches after sport are pretty much gone. I got some of the magnesium "oil" as well, and rub that directly into my skin. Tingles a bit, but usually only if I am a bit low on it.

  15. Cooperative Bank UK : a bail-in? Anyone familiar with the bank? Any ideas about the likelihood of a bail-in? I got an acct here years ago after hearing it was an 'ethical' bank. Thought that it was well capitalised a few years back when others were under strain. But alas this is not the case?

  17. from the bbc Co-op Bank considers alternative rescue plan options The bank faces a £1.5bn shortfall Continue reading the main story Related Stories Co-op Bank unveils rescue plan Co-op Group reports big banking loss Former Co-op boss says he warned bank over-stretched The Co-operative Bank is to look into alternatives to a current £1.5bn rescue plan. The bank has already suggested the financing will come from sales of its insurance businesses, a bond issuance to existing bondholders, and capital from the Co-operative group. On Friday the Co-op said an independent committee would be formed to discuss other options. It will be chaired by the bank's chairman, Richard Pym. The bank's current plan does not involve any help from taxpayers, but will mean bond-holders will lose out in the short term. Financing problems have been an issue for the Co-operative for some time. Earlier this year it reported a loss of £709m, with nearly £500m in write-downs from its merger with the Britannia Building Society. It was also compelled to pull out of a proposed purchase of 600 Lloyds Bank branches, after its funding shortfalls came to light.

Housing-Market / UK Housing Aug 19, 2013 - 03:11 AM GMTBy: Nadeem_Walayat Prospective U.K. home buyers who may have been persuaded by the pseudo-economists, financial / economic journalists that populate the mainstream press as to the sustainability for any rise in UK house prices will over the past few months been finding themselves in an increasingly panicky state as UK house prices have literally started to soar as illustrated by the latest data and news out of RICS that reported that house prices are now rising at their fastest pace in 7 years, with their indices giving their best readings since November 2006.
