Okay.
Here's what i want to see (after reading this thread):

ZERO or Low tolerance for these four: Swampy, Carbon Junkie, GOM and Fitkid
(I know Swamp is gone)
They are now on a Watch List.  And will get 24hour to 1week suspensions, whenever the Mods here choose.

And a bit more leniency for the others that step over the line from time to time.

I will start a new thread - to go into the "ABOUT GEI" section, to see if we need to add anyone to the Watch List
from time to time.

I certainly do not think Catflap belongs on the Watch List

Good solid decision, I will try to suggest some other constructive ideas later.

Someone was complaining about autocratic mods. Just wait for the rule of catflap.  

I will leave GEI for good if catflap becomes a mod.

That's rich coming from someone that was one of the biggest trolls on HPC back in the day. You were one of the reasons why the site went downhill because you tried to turn every thread into a gold one when the site was about house prices and the economy.

You were eventually banned from HPC along with Cagno so decided to start posting on GEI - talk about letting the fox look after the chickens. No wonder your moderation of fellow gold posters fitkid and GOM has been lacking - your reference to Swampy in you signature also shows lack of respect to DrBubb after the carnage that guy left.

The same goes to GOM - constant references to Swampy are like giving DrBubb a poke in the eye. You don't do it.

Why not leave it at that.  I cannot see any point in getting into a spat now with GF.
I value the postings of both of you, and do not want to be choosing between you too.

If matters were reversed, and you were a Mod, and he was not, I would take exactly the same action.

I haven't posted one reply on this or the others of this 'ilk' purposely to show people that I am certainly not a troll nor am I a 'bad' poster. I have never sworn at anyone privately or publicly, yet catflap swore several times at me & I still didn't respond in kind.

My take on all this is that some of us have stuck our necks out to get this problem resolved once and for all, and if we back away now it will be a lost opportunity that will only have to be revisited at a later date.

i tell you what, why don't you dig out the original 'letting-off steam' thread by Dr. Bubb, I seem to recall we had some exchanges there on the subject of manners, aggressive posting and abusive language

I just had a PM from someone who is considering leaving GEI... at least for a while.

In part, he says:
"I will be pleased to return if/when I see a sensible balance: a very firm hand with very extreme offences, a very light touch with absolutely everything else."

I think this sums up what everyone wants.

We need to do a better job of defining what are "extreme offenses."  Some of the infractions that have got people suspended seem rather minor to me.  But where that has been met with a 24 hour suspension, I think "so what", since that is such a short period, and brings a short cooling off, which may be a good thing.

What everyone needs to keep in mind is that no one is perfect.  That includes me, and it includes our voluntary moderators too.  I was the very first person to be suspended for 24 hours.  I wanted to see how it felt.  In truth, it is not a big deal.  So if it happens, try to treat ot that way, even if you feel it was unfair.

If you feel that you really have been abused, then send me an email (if you can find my email address on Google), or send me a PM on HPC (where I try to post at least once per week, if not more.)

I would like to suggest that this thread and all other matters about moderator policy, trolling etc... be moved to 'About GEI' That way arguments will not be conducted in full public view and those who do not wish to be involved in them will not have to read through these matters. This way only people who are genuinely interested in the way the board is run can will contribute and it will starve attention from posts that are there to disrupt and create divisions.

Moderators were wise to move the 'Explanation for the banning of GOM and CARBON JUNKIE, RH please address this mind boggling anamoly?????' thread to the fringe, it was a thread made purely to bait other members. I would like to suggest that comments and discussions about moderators past and present decisions and and troll accusations should also remain the 'About GEI' section. One of the most disruptive things we have seen over the past year is threads, like the Gold Thread, become infested with all sorts of negative side swipes against other posters.

I would be very sad to see Bigtbigt leave the forum and hope that he has chance to reconsider and if he does leave he would be welcome back anytime. I would also be disappointed to see Catflap leave and I hope he can step back and realise that Goldfinger is not an enemy, he just did the best he could in the circumstances given.

The mute/suspension function should be seen as a tool for 'damage limitation' rather than a punishment or judgement on an individual. They help prevent minor incidents from escalating and give the suspended individual the chance to cool down before they post something in the heat of the moment that they may regret.

These threads below could also be moved to About GEI, they will give posters the chance to find out what has gone on over the past year and realise why board members have reached a consensus on these matters.

Edit: I Would also like to add that posters make an effort not to use words that can be read as swear words, starring out the letters is not really an effective method of making it harmless, because the onus of accurate communication should be on the person making the post and should be on them to remove any ambiguity. i think it would be a crying shame if an answer cant be had to the issues in this thread,  i have not found another forum with the same quality of threads as here.

what about a thunder dome thread?  a no holes barred slagging off thread in the members only section,   any thread that turns into a shouting match could be moved there by the mods. that way people wont feel like they may get banned for having an off day and the rest of us could just go about our business quietly and courteously.

or we could hold a monthly bare knuckle fighting competition?  i would be happy to provide the half time oranges
