Maybe sometime in the New Year, someone can start a Poll about whether
we shiuld give "swampy" a second chance. But not yet. If anyone starts such a thread in 2008,
I will move it to this section.

I did not even know that he had been banned! I liked some of his posts and there was some wisdom hidden within the general ravings.

I think it is time to let cdswamp back on GEI. Perhaps the "holiday" will have done cdswamp some good, there is only one way to find out.

I just read the thread blink.gif

I had him on ignore - you can't debate with someone who doesn't deploy any reason and prefers to enter shouting matches.

Any forum member can do the same so there's no need for banning. Each person can enforce their own ban individually.

I didn't know that he had been banned until now and was wondering why, until I read this thread.

That is simply not fair!
Go and read the thread, and his rather shocking abuse:
http://www.greenenergyinvestors.com/index....=5388&st=60
I think I am rather tolerant here. At least I try to be. And he crossed the line.

I dont think anyone should vote, until they read the thread, with language like this:
"Ok I---, number one, you can suck my !!!!, no 2, I'll make this very quick and very dirty.

You and your ilk like to think you are fucking clever, right? You and n---- or whatever his name is, other assorted retards, D--- a prime example, D--- saying to me that he has met some retarded Shriners (that is, wannabe Freemasons, right I---)? that, in his fucking opinion, could not do up their laces or buy some spaghetti, let alone be involved in some, chortle chortle chortle, conspiracy to rule the world? Right?
He thinks that because he has met some idiotic low-level retards, he has it all sussed"
UNQUOTE- it goes on.

Personally, I dont think anything less than a one month suspension would make sense.
So I will take another look at this thread and this issue after Jan.20th

Keep voting, but read his remarks first, please!

True that any forum member could choose to put him on ignore, but I feel that the sort of interaction shown by cdswamp are damaging to the forum. How many guests, potential new members and serious investors are put off a forum by that sort of posting.

There are plenty of forums on the Internet where cdswamps posts will be perfectly at home, theres no need turn this forum into one of those places.

Now there you are wrong- as far as I am concerned.
I dont want to see the sort of nasty behaviour which is common on some other forums that I visit spread here.
I am tolerant, but I will also draw a line when I feel it is necessary

What is 'necessity'?

Is a goal for this forum free speech, meeting of minds, sharing of information or do you plan growing it into a commercial enterprise which creates a revenue stream?

Or neither?

There's plenty of free speech here - but little room or patience with pointless abuse.
Speak your mind, but do it without insulting others.

Genuine free speech has a quality of respect for the listener. Mere pointless noise is childish blather.
I dont have a huge tolerance for childish blather, (whether you call it free speech or something else),
it merely degrads the level of discussion

As for the commercialisation of the website:
I see it evolving into different sections: with Main staying more or less as it is, and the more commercial
discussions moving towards the GEI-N networking section. But they need a little time and exposure here
on Main first. They have potential to help build this community into something better: more practical,
more commercially effective- and I want to give some of these threads a chance to find a bit of an
audience. And also help people discover the new section.

But if you hate them, you are welcome to tell me so. Please try to do so without abuse.

(I have changed the title, in an attempt to open the discussion even more.)

Free speech.... as long as the mods agree. Why on earth was my post about China shifted to "networking"???? Who the hell goes there? And what has THIS got to do with networking????

HONG KONG: At the docks here, the stacks of shipping containers that used to loom above the highway overpass are gone. Logistics managers say they negotiate deeper discounts every week on ships that are leaving half empty.

In nearby Guangdong Province, so many factories are closing without paying employees that some workers are resigning pre-emptively and demanding immediate pay before their employers go bankrupt.

In Sichuan and other interior provinces, municipal officials are desperately searching for ways to provide jobs for millions of out-of-work migrant laborers whose families no longer need them for farming.

Those are the effects of millions of Americans' cutting their spending.

American retailers, after suffering a dismal holiday shopping season, are delaying payment for Chinese goods 90 or even 120 days after shipping, in contrast to the usual 30 to 45 days, requiring their suppliers to try to borrow more money to cover the difference. Some Chinese suppliers who cannot raise the money - many already operate on thin margins - are going out of business.

Funny how things change (so quickly), innit?

Perhaps we can get back to making things in our own Countries, employing our own Countrymen, and avoiding the insane waste of fuel spent on sending cheap (crap) toys thousands of miles across the globe..... more wasteful than SUV driving 'burb dwellers, perhaps!

A special thread of a critical nature in the first post was made to comment on one particular member viz. cdswamp.

I know other sites where this is permitted in a special "insult" or personal argument forum.

In those more experienced places, the baited bear is allowed to respond in not so polite terms because being baited is the least polite thing imaginable that might be done to a member of a board. However, the mutual rudeness must be confined to that special forum.

If you bait a bear, don't be surprised if you get some growls and maybe a few blows in return.

What was done with that baiting thread was very wrong, bearing in mind that this site has no defined rules of conduct.

What happened is a poor reflection on this site.

There's an idea.
Allow the insulting or abusive remark to remain, but move the thread to a special section.\
Might work. But isnt that unfair for the other posters on the same thread?

Dubai,
Which Thread was it?
As you may have noticed, I am trying to collect threads of interest to HK based people in the GEI-N section.\
It is impossible to please everyone all the time, so I wont try all the time

Well, the main idea is that if people want to go and have a slanging match that's the place to start the thread.

And otherwise if an abusive exchange begins within some other thread, the relevant posts (not the whole thread) are put in a new thread called "Why X thinks Y is a blank and has no ideas about blankety" or something, in the "insult" forum, or whatever it might be called. Highly abusive posts even if not off-topic could be in danger of being put in such "quarantine".

This is useful to isolate personal arguments in a separate forum, which could be non-visible to non-members.

I've seen threads in such forums where members are named and "baited", but at least it's confined to a special forum and the rules are known, i.e. personal insults are to be confined to that forum only.

Let's hope this stuff won't be needed much if ever. But I think baiting any member without a defined structure is a big mistake.

Come to think of it. Are these arguments free? smile.gif
