Through the implementation of a resource-based economy, and a multitude of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies directly applied to the social system, The Venus Project proposals will dramatically reduce crime, poverty, hunger, homelessness, and many other pressing problems that are common throughout the world today.

 

One of the cornerstones of the organization's findings is the fact that many of the dysfunctional behaviors of today's society stem directly from the dehumanizing environment inherent in the existing monetary system. Moreover, the currently utilized random implementation of automation and other technologies have resulted in a fragmented, self-defeating trend occurring throughout the manufacturing and high-tech sectors of today's global economy--namely the technological replacement of human labor by machines. The Venus Project proposes a social system in which automation and technology would be intelligently applied and integrated into an overall social design where the primary function would be to maximize the quality of life rather than profits. This project also introduces a set of workable and acceptable human values that are more appropriate and in balance with our present state of technology.

The Venus Project's proposals and methods for arriving at a new social design are as follows:

 

Phase 1: The 25-acre planning center in Venus, Florida, which is already complete.

 

Phase 2: The production of books, pamphlets, and videos inviting the participation of people who advocate a similar direction. The Venus Project would also like to produce a feature-length motion picture and a television series, which would be a very effective way of presenting this evolutionary vision to a much larger audience.

 

 

Phase 3: The building of a new experimental city.

 

If our project appeals to a sufficient number of people and enough funds are made available, it will be directed toward the building of the first university city. The size and complexity of the city would depend on the funds available. This first experimental city would be a major planning, research, and development center where new technologies could be developed. It would also serve as a showplace for these new, clean technologies, operating in a pollution-free environment with built-in processes for recycling waste. Another of its functions would be to serve as a center for the dissemination of information in all areas of the social complex. It could serve as a global networking center, eventually inviting the participation of all nations, individuals, and organizations.

Who is Jacque Fresco?

Mr. Fresco’s background includes industrial design and social engineering, as well as being a forerunner in the field of Human Factors. Mr. Fresco has worked as both designer and inventor in a wide range of fields spanning from biomedical innovations to totally integrated social systems. Mr. Fresco has been a guest lecturer at many institutions of higher learning. He was a guest speaker for the Tenth Symposium for the Civil Engineering Department of TEC de Monterrey University in Monterrey, Mexico, Latin America’s top rated college. Mr. Fresco was a guest speaker at The Utopian Studies Conference in Orlando , FL and lectured at several World Future Society Conferences.

 

We have all heard lectures that downgrade the present state of affairs. They speak of such social problems as lawlessness, poverty, racial tension and divorce. But how many of us can recall any of these lectures offering creative solutions to these problems? Mr. Fresco’s presentations reflect a serious attempt to illuminate the causes and outline a wide range of constructive alternatives. He does this by presenting a redesign of our culture, one that would emphasize the intelligent use of science and technology to enhance the lives of all people while protecting our environment. His subjects range from “New Dimensions in Human Stupidity” to “Imagineering The Future.” A video often accompanies the lectures where his ideas are vividly brought to life through animated models, illustrations and computer animation.

 

His particular lecture technique enables uninformed audiences to grasp the significance of complex social and technical innovations He speaks dramatically and brilliantly about the urgent transitional problems facing our contemporary society. His audiences find their attention focused intensely and they closely follow his presentation from beginning to end. Mr. Fresco’s lectures have been consistently praised and enthusiastically received.

 

Jacque Fresco is the founder of Sociocyberneering, Inc., now known as The Venus Project and the non-profit organization The Venus Project. With his associate Roxanne Meadows, he has designed and built the entire twenty-five acre research facility. Environmental Sustainability

 

We're currently accepting Work in Progress submissions of 250 words or less for our January-March 2009 issue on Environmental Sustainability. These will not be peer-reviewed but will be reviewed by the Department Editor, Anthony Joseph, and, if accepted, edited by the staff into a feature for the issue. The deadline for work-in-progress submissions is 1 November 2008.

Environmental sustainability is rapidly emerging as an important and timely topic for pervasive computing research, motivated by increased awareness of issues such as global warming, depletion of natural resources, and e-waste. The creation, use, and disposal of large quantities of pervasive technologies such as sensors and mobile devices have strong implications for resource consumption and waste production. How can pervasive computing systems be designed so that they are environmentally sensitive from a material perspective? Further, pervasive technologies can be a powerful means of informing and influencing sustainable action and decisions by individuals, businesses, governments, and other organizations. How can pervasive computing systems be designed to support and persuade environmentally sustainable practices and behaviors?

 

This special issue provides a forum for cutting-edge work on pervasive technologies that are designed, deployed, or implemented in an environmentally responsible manner, as well as pervasive technologies that promote environmentally responsible actions.

 

Topics

 

Example topics for this special issue include but are not limited to the following:

 

* design for technology re-use, re-purposing, or lifetime extension;

* sensor network applications that support the efficient use or protection of natural resources;

* grass roots sensing empowering local populations to track and act on information about pollution, traffic, or other conditions relating to sustainability;

* analysis and decision making tools for gathering and presenting information that supports sustainable choices by individuals or businesses;

* the use of pervasive computing to support sustainability-related behavior change;

* novel systems, devices, or interfaces that support stewardship of the natural environment;

* social networking tools that support environmentally friendly actions;

* new business models that promote sustainable use of pervasive devices;

* lessons learned from, conceptual frameworks, and methods for integrating sustainability into pervasive computing;

* qualitative or quantitative studies of sustainable practices;

* user studies examining how pervasive technologies mediate, redefine, or otherwise influence sustainable behaviors;

* low-power hardware; and

* resource-efficient system design

 

Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should follow the magazine's guidelines on style and presentation. All submissions will be peer-reviewed in accordance with normal practice for scientific publications. Submissions should be received by 23 June 2008 to receive full consideration.

 

In addition to full-length submissions, we also invite work-in-progress submissions of 250 words or less.
