NASA's Perseverance Rover Sends New Video and Images of the Red Planet

NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover safely touched down on the Red Planet on Feb. 18. So what will the robotic scientist "see" on her descent and what will she do next? Join mission experts for update about the rover – the biggest, heaviest, cleanest, and most sophisticated six-wheeled robot ever launched into space – including imagery it captured and its mission to explore Mars.

NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Completes Flight on Mars

https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/106870099-1618828520725-PIA24581-16width-1280.jpg?v=1618828669&w=630&h=354

Key Points
  • NASA successfully conducted the first controlled flight on another planet on Monday — its Mars helicopter Ingenuity flew a short flight above the red planet.
  • The agency described Ingenuity’s flight as “a Wright Brothers moment” on another planet.
  • NASA flew the 4-pound craft for 39.1 seconds to an altitude of about 10 feet above the surface.

Ingenuity Flies Again as Perseverance Rover Starts Looking for Life on Mars

After weeks of Earthlings fawning over Venus and the Perseverance rover stepping out of its shell to begin its scientific mission, one can imagine the Mars helicopter Ingenuity felt a little miffed that the spotlight has moved on. But on Tuesday morning, NASA announced that the helicopter had completed its eighth flight, putting the helicopter back in the mix of space exploration conversation.

Pardon Mars' Dust?

On Mars, dust gets everywhere and can ruin everything

Mars is dusty. Like, really dusty. And that dust may suffocate NASA’s InSight mission.

InSight sits on the surface of Mars measuring marsquakes and observing the local weather, powering itself with a pair of solar arrays that soak up energy from the sun. Since it landed in November 2018, InSight has been operating for more than 920 sols (Mars days), equal to about 940 Earth days.

That's seven months longer than its planned two-year mission. In that time, dust has obscured around 80 percent of the arrays, InSight’s principal investigator Bruce Banerdt shared in a presentation on June 21.

The team expects to keep InSight running through the summer, but as that dust keeps piling up, it won’t be able to press on much longer.

We May Finally Have The Location of Mysterious 'Alien Burps' Detected on Mars

A group of scientists may have just pinpointed the location on Mars of a mysterious source of methane, a gas most often produced by microbes - and NASA's Curiosity rover could be right on top of it.

Methane blips have pinged on Curiosity's detection systems six times since the rover landed in Mars' Gale crater in 2012, but scientists weren't able to find a source for them. Now, with a new analysis, researchers may have traced the methane burps to their origin.

To calculate the unknown methane source, researchers at the California Institute of Technology modeled the methane gas particles by splitting them into discrete packets. Taking into account the wind speed and direction at the time of their detection, the team traced their parcels of methane back through time to their possible points of emission.

Mars helicopter Ingenuity soars through challenging 12th flight on Red Planet

NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity made its 12th Red Planet flight on Monday (Aug. 16), during which the little chopper served as eyes in the sky for its larger companion, the Perseverance rover.

The flight was designed to serve as reconnaissance for the rover's continuing explorations of a region dubbed South Séítah, according to a flight plan NASA posted before the attempt that called the sortie "ambitious."

"Flying over Séítah South carries substantial risk because of the varied terrain," Ingenuity scientists wrote in the plan. "When we choose to accept the risks associated with such a flight, it is because of the correspondingly high rewards. Knowing that we have the opportunity to help the Perseverance team with science planning by providing unique aerial footage is all the motivation needed."
