Dollar Tumbles as Yen, Euro Rally on Irma, ECB: Markets Wrap

  • Peso, Bolsa drop after Mexico earthquake; base metals plunge
  • Yen rallies, stocks mixed as storm tears through Carribbean

The dollar dropped to the weakest in more than two years and Mexican markets fell as natural disasters continued to assail North America and the Caribbean.

The greenback sank Friday as traders girded for economic damage to Florida from Hurricane Irma, set to make landfall Sunday. West Texas crude saw its biggest drop in more than two months as the storm threatened to curtail demand for oil. The S&P 500 Index fell 0.15 percent while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose less than 0.1 percent. Ten-year Treasury yields reached 2.05 percent.

Overnight, the most powerful earthquake in a century shook Mexico, adding to investor anxiety. The Mexican Bolsa and peso both declined.

Industrial metals plunged on North Korea tensions and concern over Chinese manufacturing. Nickel dropped as much as 5.6 percent on the London Metal Exchange and copper fell more than 3 percent.

60 SHADES: CBS Used Color Tricks to Make Steve Bannon Look Evil?

EXCLUSIVE: ‘60 Minutes’ Responds To Allegations That It Intentionally Altered Steve Bannon’s Appearance: “It’s Nonsense”

Last night, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon appeared on CBS60 Minutes, and the interview was nothing short of riveting. Bannon aimed insults at Hillary Clinton all night, insisting that “she’s not very bright” and criticizing her for being out of touch with real issues; he also said that the firing of former FBI chief James Comey was tantamount to the worst mistake in “modern political history.” However, what Bannon told Charlie Rose isn’t the only thing at issue today. Photographer Peter Duke has some major issues with CBS’ treatment of Bannon, and in a video posted on his YouTube channel, Duke explains how the network could have altered the video’s color to make Bannon appear “like a bleary-eyed drunk.”

THE LIST GROWS - haha - she's becoming so utterly ridiculous & mal-odorous

Hellary had to write a new book, so she could add to her list of enemies

Clinton Blames Comey, Russia, WikiLeaks, Facebook, Fake News, Voter ID Laws, Sexism, and Misogyny for Losing
‘And let’s not forget sexism and misogyny, which are endemic to our society’

Hillary Clinton believes that were it not for James Comey, Russia, Wikileaks, Facebook, fake news, voter ID laws, or America's "endemic" sexism and misogyny, she would currently be president of the United States.

In just under two minutes, Clinton rattled off eight separate excuses for losing the 2016 election.

Clinton claims that, "If the election were on October 27, I would be your president," singling out James Comey in particular for re-opening an investigation into her mishandling of classified material. (Others notably argue that Comey kept Clinton in the campaign by preemptively exonerating Clinton before the FBI had concluded its own investigation.)

"I went from 26 points ahead to 13 points ahead, and I needed about 18 points in order to be sure to win Pennsylvania," Clinton said of the impact of Comey's notorious letter explaining he was re-opening the investigation. "I watched how analysts who I have a great deal of respect for, like Nate Silver, burrowed into all the data and said that 'but for that Comey letter, she would have won.'"

"So it was very personal to me," she said in an interview with CBS's Jane Pauley. "I think my general election prospects were badly damaged because of that, so that even though I was starting to come back, it was not enough time to overcome it."

Clinton also rattled off Russia, Wikileaks, and even fake news as other culprits in her failed presidential run.

"But even though [the Comey letter] was the primary blow to my campaign at the very end, it has to be looked at in context -- with the Russians weaponizing information, negative stories about me; this whole Wikileaks beginning to leak in early October of John Podesta's emails -- which if you read them all were, they're pretty anodyne, but they were taken out of context; stories were made up about them."

I may start calling her "the female Hitler"

She's on her way to being either the most-ridiculed, or most hated woman in History.

Which I would regard as an appropriate place of record for "the satanic one"

Her evil may well rub off on her daughter.

I no longer want her jailed, & on death row.

I want her complaining to go on-and-on, with her ridiculed more and more.

When she walks in a room, I want everyone to roll their eyes & think: "What! Is she still here!?"

BITCOIN

Guest(s): John Hathaway Senior Managing Director, Tocqueville Asset Management

Tocqueville’s Chairman John Hathaway doesn’t mince words when it comes to to talking bitcoin. When asked about the cryptocurrency craze, Hathaway, manager of the $1.2 billion dollar Tocqueville gold fund, simply said, ‘garbage.’ “It's an absolute bubble -there's no question in my mind that it's in a bubble,” he said on the sidelines of the precious metals summit in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Since the start of the year, bitcoin has rallied over 300% and is currently trading over $3,800. “Sure you can make money in bubbles any time but you have to get out. Let's not forget that the total market value of these cryptocurrencies is $180 billion or so, maybe a little less now -that's tiny compared to gold.” In a recent talk, Allianz’ chief economic adviser, Mohamed El-Erian said that the recent interest in the cryptocurrencies is taking away from a gold rally. Other experts have echoed the same concerns. Hathaway thinks otherwise. “The idea that cryptocurrencies have somehow diverted interest in gold is baloney, it's just not true.” (show less)

KITCO

VIDEO: Crazy Not To Be In Gold Right Now - CEO Kitco Video News 07:51AM

... ...
Gold prices were relatively unchanged after U.S. consumers bought fewer pre-existing homes in August, according to the latest report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

Existing home sales shocked with a drop of 1.7% last month to a seasonally adjusted and annualized rate of 5.35 million units, compared to July’s annualized rate of 5.44 million homes, the association said on Wednesday.

This marked the lowest level in twelve months. Economists were expecting to see a 0.3% advance to 5.46 million units.

PHM / Pulte Homes

. . .

The median price for all existing-home types in August was $253,500, up 5.6% from last year, which marked the 66th straight month of year-over-year gains. At the same time, the association said that total inventory as of the end of August declined 2.1% to 1.88 million existing homes available for sale.

"Market conditions continue to be stressful and challenging for both prospective first-time buyers and homeowners looking to trade up," added Yun.

Many economists warn that rising home prices could potentially pose a serious challenge to future sales.
