Ten Nifty stocks - with 20% of the S&P500's MktCap

Ten Nifty stocks - mostly with not so nifty P/E's

These 10 stocks have 20% of the MktCap of the S&P-500.

But produce only 13% as much of the earnings.

Might these be the best stocks for shorting (or Put buying) ?

There used to be favored stocks trading at high PE ratiios. They were called the "Nifty 50"

Here are 9 (?) well known stocks I found trading at high prices.

The dot-com collapse two decades ago erased $5 trillion in investments. Ever since, people in Silicon Valley have tried to guess exactly when the next tech bubble will burst, and whether the latest wave of investment in tech startups will lead to an economic crash. “A lot of people who are smarter than me have come to the conclusion that we’re in a bubble,” said Rita McGrath, a professor of management at Columbia Business School. “What we’re starting to see is the early signals.”

Those signals include businesses closing or being acquired, venture capitalists making fewer investments, fewer companies going public, stocks that appear vastly overpriced, and startup valuations falling.

Surprise slide in iPhone sales...

  • Apple briefly hit a market capitalization of more than $776.59 billion on Tuesday
  • However, it reported $52.9 billion in revenue versus the $53.02 billion estimate. The stock dropped about 1.5 percent after hours.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- As Apple's stash of cash grows, so does the possibility that the company will use some of the money for a huge acquisition that would expand its empire beyond iPhones and other gadgets.
The guessing game primarily has focused on potential acquisitions of video streaming service Netflix and electric car maker Tesla Motors.
But in recent months the takeover talk has swirled around whether Apple might do something even more dramatic by trying to buy Walt Disney Co.

Facebook Sinks After Confirming Ad Growth To Slow Down "Meaningfully"
20170503_FB8.jpg

If it was still a question in anyone's mind whether Facebook was really going to slow down ad revenue growth, it's not anymore. CFO Wehner was very clear in his comments. Wehner is doubling down on the comments from last quarter that ad growth will come down "meaningfully.'' He's also maintaining the forecast of new spending of $7 billion to $7.5 billion this year, 50 percent more than last year.

Trump must be impeached. Here’s why.

A look at President Trump’s first year in office, so far
Botsford170512Trump15352.JPG

The president’s term has featured controversial executive orders and frequent conflicts with the media.
By Laurence H. Tribe May 13

Laurence H. Tribe is Carl M. Loeb University Professor and Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard Law School.

The time has come for Congress to launch an impeachment investigation of President Trump for obstruction of justice.

The remedy of impeachment was designed to create a last-resort mechanism for preserving our constitutional system. It operates by removing executive-branch officials who have so abused power through what the framers called “high crimes and misdemeanors” that they cannot be trusted to continue in office.

Does Comey's firing compare to Watergate? Bob Woodward weighs in.
Play Video3:46
The Washington Post's Bob Woodward weighs in on President Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, and remembers the Saturday Night Massacre and the Watergate scandal. (Peter Stevenson/The Washington Post)

No American president has ever been removed for such abuses, although Andrew Johnson was impeached and came within a single vote of being convicted by the Senate and removed, and Richard Nixon resigned to avoid that fate.

Now the country is faced with a president whose conduct strongly suggests that he poses a danger to our system of government.

Ample reasons existed to worry about this president, and to ponder the extraordinary remedy of impeachment, even before he fired FBI Director James B. Comey and shockingly admitted on national television that the action was provoked by the FBI’s intensifying investigation into his campaign’s ties with Russia.

Are the Bears warming up, ready to play the tune

Bear Breaks Into Mountain Condo, Bangs On Piano

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) – Video of a black bear inside a Vail condo

poking around and playing a few notes on the owners piano is getting thousands of views online.

bear.jpg?w=420&h=236

(credit: YouTube)

Vail police officers took the report of what the owner originally thought was a burglary, but her surveillance cameras captured the intruder and it had four paws.

It happened in an East Vail neighborhood on May 31.

The officer who responded to the call found evidence of the black bear inside. It is believed the bear made entry into the home through an open kitchen window. While inside, the bear did minor damage to the apartment and took food from a freezer, according to officers.

Following the report to police, the owner checked her internal camera system, which captured the event on video.

The bear can be seen wandering around the apartment and at one point went to a piano, putting its paws on the keys playing a few loud and dissonant notes.

Vail police said in a news release that “The chords captured on video were unbearable and the tune was equally grizzly.”

New ETF for hot 'FANG' tech stocks begins trading just as bubble talk heats up
  • AdvisorShares debuted its FANG-based ETF on Wednesday.
  • The fund begins with 28 companies at a price of $20 per share.
  • CEO Noah Hamman says he hopes this is not the top for FANG.

Adam Jeffery | CNBC
FANG (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google) apps on a smartphone.

The FANG group of tech stocks is crushing expectations this year, and a new tech-based exchange traded fund is looking to capitalize on the momentum.

AdvisorShares on Wednesday debuted its New Tech and Media ETF under the ticker FNG. The fund will initially track 28 "disruptive innovators," the company said.

The acronym FANG was created by CNBC's Jim Cramer and refers to four high-growth technology stocks: Facebook, Amazon.com, Netflix and Google's parent, Alphabet.

While the four stocks have soared, Wall Street has been jittery about them, with analysts raising concerns about the valuations of large-cap technology bellwethers. Talk about a FANG bubble is growing louder, with all four stocks up 20 percent or more this year.

The fund holds 24 other "similar-type companies," AdvisorShares said in a statement, such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Broadcom. The ETF opened trading at around $20 per share, seeded with $2.5 million.

"Typically these high-performing technology and media leaders drive commerce and can outperform broad market benchmarks," AdvisorShares said.

When asked whether the ETF's launch is calling the top for FANG, AdvisorShares CEO Noah Hamman said, "I hope not."

Tony C's Comment - Uptrend ending?

The market opened flat today, tried to rally, then rolled over heading lower, led by the DOW. Yesterday, as noted, the DOW resisted the decline. Today it led. We still count five waves up from Minute iv at SPX 2557: 2590-2578-2658-2606-2665. And now this 37-point decline. With this uptrend ongoing since April, we have seen these types of declines before, that ended up being just pullbacks. This one feels a bit different as the market is coming off extremely overbought levels, and three of the four FANG stocks are already in downtrends. If the DOW continues to lead/participate would think Intermediate wave iv is underway. Short term support is at SPX 2606 and the 2594 pivot, with resistance at the 2632 and 2646 pivots. Short term momentum ended the day oversold. Best to your trading!
